Barack Obama attends Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago with his family. Obama‘s children are receiving a religious upbringing he did not experience.

The journey down the aisle of that church was filled with questions because of his childhood. In Audacity of Hope, Obama’s 2006 book, Obama says his maternal grandparents were not religious people and neither was his mother. His father, who was raised a Muslim, was an atheist when Obama was born. Still, many political opponents have attempted to label Obama a Muslim, thinking this will sway conservative Christian voters away from him.

In his late twenties, Obama began to work with local churches in the Chicago area. It was then Obama said that his religious convictions were born. In his book, Obama says, the questions he had about religion did not “magically disappear” when he walked down the aisle of that church. But he says, “I felt God’s spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth
